Brown is the colour of earth, and therefore a colour of life itself.
Natural, nurturing, reliable and secure.
As anyone who has spent time exploring paint with young children will know, mixing random colour combinations is likely to end up producing some variation of brown. It represents unfussy solidility. Simplicity.

In the UK’s Autumn of 2020 and 2021’s underwhelming start, the seasonal browns seem to sing at their deepest and most golden, answering our longing for a return to stability and a more natural state. Peace of mind.
Having lost the showy but transient colours of the summer, a vale of nurturing, wholesome browns has returned. Nature has provided a quiet time of rest – and reflection.
Protecting and regenerating the earth for the year ahead.
I have dusted off my little iphone camera’s lens (as best as a lens can be dusted when it largely lives in the pocket of a gardening coat), and am looking forward to joining in with far more eminent photographers taking part in Hey Jude’s 2021 monthly photo challenge: Life in Colour. (Link here).

Brown is the starting point for the 2021 colour challenge, and seems a naturally fitting one as we move from the other worldly year that was 2020, and enter the uncertain year ahead.
John Paul II, 1987:
“The Earth will not continue to offer its harvest,
except with faithful stewardship.
We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it
for use by future generations.”

Steve Goodier:
“Get yourself grounded
and you can navigate even the stormiest roads in peace.”

Such a lovely heart-warming post Emma, and so many wonderful shades and textures of brown. I though that maybe starting with brown would put a lot of people off, but it is surprising how many of us have so many wonderful brown photos.
– I like that.

A very beautiful post. Picking up your paint image I learned very early on that brown is the natural colour of plasticine 🙂
