Pretty Ellens Green circular: 6.4m / 10k

Ellen’s Green – a well maintained, local hamlet

The starting place for this pretty, field and woodland walk is the conveniently spacious car park surrounding the Ellen’s Green community hall; around 10 minutes drive away.

A beautiful car – old but well kept, passing through an old, well kept hamlet!

Beginning in the delightful, chocolate box cluster of houses bordering Surrey and Sussex and surrounded by ancient woodlands and fields, the walk quickly takes a cross country tangent into open land, through farms, plush country pads, and sheltered woodlands.

You will pass by some beautiful country properties – not ‘estates’, but vast houses, a couple of neat cottages oozing with character, and some smart, converted barns – enjoying their second incarnation with style and design inside (as glimpsed through the vast windows!) and out.

Several fields of cows mark a change from the usual sheep who more commonly stock local fields. All surprisingly inquisitive and calm – enjoying, on this occasion, the balmy weather.

In one woodland, a smoothly honed tree trunk stood proudly central to the path. The beautifully carved, strikingly organic “eye” lending a frame to walkers through which to view the path and beyond… It’s so lovely to come upon quirky, skilful craftsmanship – giving a second life to natural features, for no reason other than to share beauty and joy.

Heading back to Ellen’s Green, the route passes the impressive Ellen’s Mansion. Complete with extensive, classically laid out stable block and ancillary accommodation, it is an impressive – and again, notably well kept – plot.

Back to the car, waiting in the shade of a fruit tree, and as we walked, a fittingly characterful old car passed by, the driver giving a happy wave as he did – see image above!

  1. Trying to see what the mansion last sold for on Zoopla, as I am being nosey, but there doesnt seem to be a lot about the mansion at all on the internet.

    1. I’m guessing it was a private sale and maybe the purchaser asked the agent to remove details? Thanks for your visit, Nigel and I hope you enjoyed the walk!

  2. I could happily do that walk. I’ve never heard of Ellen’s Mansion, despite living not that far away for many years. Lovely shots!
