Memories of banishing the blues 🙂
In September 2001, my youngest daughter’s eagerly anticipated start at ‘proper’ school (Reception) eventually arrived. Longing to sit at desks and ‘work’, she was soon frustrated; full of the ‘blues’ & bemoaning the fact that ‘all they do is play and then clear up’. She clearly hadn’t heard the eminent child psychologist Jean Piaget’s phrase ‘play is child’s work‘. For her playing at home was fun, reading, writing, numbers and grown up work was what she’d been so looking forward to at ‘school’!
So we struck a deal – she’d go to school for the morning, and I would pick her up for ‘real work’ after lunch. At the time we’d just moved into a huge derelict Victorian house, in a very sorry state of disrepair… plenty of work there for me. On the day this picture was taken, over 20 years ago, she put down the encyclopedias that she usually spent the afternoon with, and joined me with the afternoon’s task: painting the bedroom she shared with her sister, in a choice blue – sporting her favourite blue knitted beanie and blue school smock.

Those blue blooms do make a summer garden beautiful. Cornwall and Devon are wonderful areas to explore. Sussex is another area we had the privilege of living in for months. I’ve been a dedicated follower of Jude and other photographers for a few years.

Lovely set of blues Emma. Once again thank you for the effort you put into this challenge. One or two amendments though – 1) the challenge IS run on my Travel Words blog, but that is not the Cornish one which is purely about Cornwall https://cornwallincolours.blog/
and 2) should the date your daughter started nursery school be 2000 not 2020? Going by the photo taken 20 years ago I suspect it wasn’t last year! She does look to be having fun painting the wall. I remember my boys when young eager to help me decorate. After half an hour with a roller they were complaining “me arm aches!”

I’m afraid it was more ‘miss’ than ‘hit’, but as it was quite wet anyway she took the opportunity for lots of exhilarating sea swimming, which she loved – as well as the landscape and towns. A great report back from her – I really will go one day and looking forward to it! 🙂
